Stagno di Pilo is a privately owned coastal wetland in north-western Sardinia, located between the Gulf of Asinara and the coastal dune system, characterized by high ecological value habitats and rich biodiversity.

While privately owned, the site is also subject to European, national and regional environmental protection regulations aimed at safeguarding habitats and species of community interest.

The area is recognized at European level as part of the Natura 2000 network under the designation “Stagno di Pilo e Casaraccio” and is classified both as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area (SPA) for the protection of natural habitats and species of community interest.

Within this ecosystem, lagoon environments, dune vegetation, wetlands and nesting areas coexist, forming essential habitats for numerous species of birds, reptiles, mammals and Mediterranean plants.

The presence of over 150 bird species makes the lagoon an important stopover site for migratory birds and an area of particular importance for biodiversity conservation.

The Stagno di Pilo Agricultural Estate follows the principles of the Natura 2000 network, which promotes the protection of Europe’s most valuable ecosystems through a balanced coexistence between nature conservation, sustainable activities and human presence.

Dune vegetation and the shores of the lagoon represent sensitive nesting areas and are subject to specific conservation and management measures.

Access prohibited to dunes and lake’s shoreline

Dunes and surrounding wetlands are extremely fragile environments: even simple trampling can damage dune vegetation, accelerate erosion processes and disturb wildlife that uses these areas for feeding and nesting.

Access to the dunes and to the lagoon shoreline is therefore strictly prohibited.

Unauthorized access constitutes a violation of private property and is harmful to an ecosystem of high natural value.

Stagno di Pilo is one of the most significant wetland ecosystems in northern Sardinia. The area is managed with a focus on habitat protection, research, ecological monitoring and biodiversity conservation.

The conservation of these wetlands is essential to maintain the ecological balance of the Mediterranean coastal zone and to contribute to the international network for the protection of natural environments.

Respecting these rules is essential to ensure the long-term protection of this unique ecosystem.

To protect this fragile environment, it is essential to:

Walk only on marked paths or along the shoreline, avoiding sand dunes.

• Observe wildlife from a distance without approaching or disturbing animals.

• Access the beach only through designated entry points.

• Do not collect plants, flowers, sand or any natural elements.

• Take your litter with you or use designated recycling bins where available.

Respect private property and environmental protection regulations in force.
